What is an Artist’s Book?

Artists’ books or art books are works of art realized in the form of a book. Most are made as one-of-a-kind objects referred to as “uniques.” If they are produced as an edition, is is usually a small edition. Artist books are usually multi-media. They can incorporate drawings, prints, photographs, collage, and found objects. Text is sometimes set with letterpress. Bindings are usually hand-stitched (sometimes with elaborate patterns).

Artists books can be displayed in more than one way (closed, standing, open or expanded, or fanned open while lying flat on the spine). Artists’ books typically encourage interaction with page turning or opening of special flaps (however, the viewer should wear cotton gloves to protect the art, and ask before handling).
