Who does not know the mysterious feeling that you have experienced a completely new situation before? Déjà vu is a brief moment of clear-sightedness that leaves behind a powerful and unnerving impression—a sense of unexplainable recognition or familiarity.
A6 Artist Members are challenged to create original prints and artists books that elicit a feeling of déjà vu in the viewer—prompting them to wonder, “Have I seen that before?”
In print, artists are asked to create a sense of déjà vu between two related prints; prints will be displayed in pairs. An artist may also collaborate with other artists—swapping print scraps and plates—to spark déjà vu in multiple works across the exhibit.
Reproducible elements (marks in a plate, stencils, repeated pattern, or collaged layers of past prints), can be used to create a sense of visual familiarity. Within an artist book or pair of prints, such synchronizations of past and present, presence and absence, seeing and remembering, and surprise and recognition are characteristic of déjà vu.
This call is open exclusively to active A6 Artist Members (membership must be current at time of entry and for the duration of the exhibit). Original prints, drawings, mixed-media works on paper, and artist books are eligible. Reproduction will NOT be accepted. Works must be completed in 2018.
Prints and other works on paper may be any dimension. Artist books must not exceed 12” in any dimension when closed. All book forms are welcome and must reflect the theme of the exhibit. Books must be hand-assembled; no commercially-bound books are allowed.
Sandy Brooke, encaustic artist and professor at Oregon State University – Cascades. Her current work mixes past and present together through disparate images in layers of wax.
Works will not be juried without an accompanying entry form and paid $15 entry fee. Artists may submit up to eight works, grouped in pairs of two, for consideration.
Jurying will be done by the actual work; work may be submitted unframed for jurying. Please put each unframed work in a clear poly or newsprint sleeve (entry tags will be attached to the back of each sleeve). Members may pick up accepted works after Oct. 19 and return them framed by Nov. 25.
Works must be framed with archival materials. Use only white and off-white mats (no cream or colored mats) with a 3″ minimum uniform width on sides and top (extra weighting is allowed at the bottom). Please use quality wood or metal frames in black or silver. Frames must include a picture hanging wire (no tabs, hooks or sawtooth hangers).
Bend Art Center reserves the right to refuse artwork that is not framed to an acceptable level or is not ready for hanging.
All artworks entered must be for sale. All work is sold on consignment. For sales made during the exhibit and 90 days afterward, A6 Member Artists receive 60% of the sale price. Sale proceeds will be paid to the artist by January 15, 2019.
By entering, the artist grants permission to Bend Art Center to use images of submitted works for promotions and publications. Submission of entry constitutes agreement to all conditions in this call for entries.
