Inspired by the closing of Barnum & Bailey Circus this past spring, local artist Dawn Emerson mines her memories of “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Her prints and mixed-media works are vicarious experiences—we project ourselves onto the high wire or into the mouth of a lion. Emerson’s art reminds us that danger and risk taking are permitted under the big top. The ringmaster controls the ceremony and clowns provide comedic relief from tension. Elephants dance together, horses and trick riders defy gravity, tigers jump through rings of fire, and humans take flight. Using simple cut outs, textured materials, layers of color, and different printmaking processes, Emerson captures a time, place and feeling that lives on in our imagination.
Gallery Hours: Mon-Fri 10-7 pm, Sat 10-6 pm, Sun Noon-5 pm
